This is a renovation project in Yatsuo, Toyama Prefecture that transformed the old Japanese house into the studio of photographer Mr. Yusuke Takano. To create the space, we remained the existing wood structure and add geometric abstraction to infill. It all started by noting that there are elements of modernism in spaces where the vertical and horizontal structures of traditional Japanese architecture appear. The space was greatly changed by painting an abstract painting to site-specific canvas as an optimal solution to the limited construction budget. 富山県八尾の古民家の改修プロジェクト、写真家・高野裕輔氏のスタジオ、庵(an)-graphです。立派に現れている軸組を素直に見せ、幾何学的抽象の付加によって空間をつくっています。写真家の石元泰博が作品集「桂離宮」で表した、桂離宮を平面的に切り取ればモンドリアンの絵に見えるような「日本の伝統建築の中にモダニズムを見た」示唆からインスピレーションを得たことから始まり、限られた施工予算に対する最適解としてシンプルに色を塗ること、そしてそれより高次のここにしかないキャンバスに抽象画を描くという手法で空間を大きく変えました。
