Shori

This is the design for a new product, a Buddhist altar called as Shori, for Okoshi Butsudan. We were asked to use the Buddhist symbol of "two fish" as a motif in the design. So we started designing based on the story of a carp climbing a waterfall, becoming a dragon, and then being called to heaven and becoming a Buddha to watch over the people. We expressed "a carp climbing a waterfall" and "light from heaven" using lines and silver leaf. Designing a Buddhist altar, a small architectural space for Buddha in Takaoka, a city famous for Buddhist altar implements, was a meaningful job for us as architects based in the city. 大越仏壇の新商品仏壇「昇鯉」のデザインです。「二匹の魚」という仏教のシンボルをモチーフにデザインして欲しいとの要望のもと、鯉が滝を登り、竜となり、天に召し仏様となって見守るというストーリーを立て、線と銀箔で「滝を登る鯉」、「天からの光」を表現しました。仏具の街「高岡」での仏様の小さな建築空間である仏壇のデザインは、この場所を拠点にしている建築家として意義深い仕事でした。
